Estoy aquí, Swedenborg.
Bueno, lamento decir que mi trabajo fue un fracaso y que, por ello, he sufrido mucho desde que me convertí en espíritu. Ahora sé que lo que intenté hacer se vio perjudicado por mis ideas preconcebidas basadas en las enseñanzas ortodoxas, y que no cumplí con la gran misión para la que fui seleccionado.
Sin embargo, debo decir ahora, y debes creerme, que has sido seleccionado para hacer la obra que yo fracasé en realizar, y espero que me permitas darte un consejo: toma, registra y cree únicamente en los mensajes tal como te lleguen de Jesús y de los demás espíritus elevados, y no permitas que ninguna opinión propia estropee o coloree estas comunicaciones. Las verdades os serán presentadas y debéis aceptarlas tal como lleguen.
Cuando vine al mundo espiritual y me di cuenta de mi fracaso, todo era fracaso en mi conciencia [conscience].
En tu caso, no tienes ideas preconcebidas que te obstaculicen o te impidan recibir las verdades, pues se te utiliza simplemente como un conducto a través del cual estas verdades han de ser recibidas; y han de ser declaradas en el lenguaje mismo de los autores.

Swedenborg – No conocía el Amor Divino como algo distinto al amor natural que le fue otorgado en su creación (8 abril 1917)
Estoy aquí, Swedenborg.
Solo quiero decir que he estado leyendo mi obra mientras tú la lees, y que ahora me doy cuenta de cuántos errores y falsedades cometí en ella. Los errores son tantos que me tomaría más tiempo del que tengo esta noche para darte un breve esbozo de los mismos. Pero pronto vendré a escribirte, y espero que puedas concederme una tarde en la que pueda escribir sin límite de tiempo.
Desde que habito el mundo espiritual, he descubierto que en mis escritos abundan las declaraciones sobre mis experiencias en la vida mortal ─cuando se me permitió entrar en el mundo espiritual mediante mi espíritu o, como decía entonces, a través de mis interiores [interiors]─, que no fueron concebidas ni interpretadas con exactitud. Por ello, resulta imperativo que las corrija y describa conforme a la verdad que ahora conozco; especialmente necesaria es esta labor dado que cuento en la Tierra con un gran número de mortales que creen en mis enseñanzas y tratan de seguirlas en sus vidas y obras. Así pues, comprenderás mi afán [anxiety] por que se me permita escribir. Esta noche no escribiré más. Bueno, lamento decir que desconocía el Amor Divino, que al ser recibido en el alma hizo ángeles a los hombres y los recreó, de modo que sus almas se volvieron Divinas en su sustancia misma. No conocía este Amor como algo distinto del amor que se otorgó al hombre en su creación, y que, en sí mismo, no tiene nada de Divino. No, lo ignoraba y nunca lo aprendí en el mundo espiritual, ni en mis visitas a él ni en mis conversaciones con los espíritus.
Ahora sé que, por muy grande que sea el amor dominante [ruling love] de un hombre por la falsedad y el mal cuando entra en los infiernos, tendrá la oportunidad de transformar dicho amor; y que, en última instancia, los amores de todos los que están en los infiernos se transformarán en amor por el bien: en algunos casos, en Amor de lo Divino y, en otros, en la purificación de sus amores naturales hasta alcanzar aquello que los hará hombres perfectos.
Estas son algunas de las cosas sobre las que deseo escribir, y hay muchas otras igualmente erróneas.
Estoy en las Esferas Celestiales y, por supuesto, soy un ángel de Dios y poseedor de Su Amor Divino, que ha hecho que mi alma se vuelva Divina, y que la inmortalidad se convierta para mí en algo que puedo comprender y poseer.

Lucas – Confirma que Swedenborg escribió. Importancia de corregir los errores en sus escritos (8 abril 1917)
Estoy aquí, Lucas.
Vengo a decirte que no debes dudar de que Swedenborg te escribió, y que lo que escribiste, o mejor dicho, recibiste en respuesta a tus preguntas, él realmente lo escribió. Todos deseamos que te escriba sobre esos temas de los que ha expresado el deseo de hacerlo, ya que muchas de las enseñanzas y doctrinas contenidas en sus escritos terrenales son erróneas y deben ser corregidas, pues muchos mortales las están estudiando y creyendo, y todo para desviarlos de la verdad.
El gran error o falsedad que debe corregirse es su enseñanza de que Jesús es Dios. Esto es blasfemo y aborrecible para todos los espíritus angelicales, y más para el Maestro que para cualquier otro; y para corregirlo, Swedenborg debe escribir. Bueno, no escribiré más esta noche, excepto para decir que ha llegado otro aniversario de la resurrección del Maestro, como se cree, y los hombres adoran a Jesús como Dios y le envían sus alabanzas y agradecimientos como el gran redentor del mundo por su muerte y «resurrección», mientras que, como sabes, su muerte tuvo muy poco que ver con esa redención, y su resurrección no fue la resurrección que él enseñó que podía ser la experiencia y la posesión de toda la humanidad. Es lamentable y destructivo para la verdad que los hombres crean y enseñen que el mero resurgir [resurrection] del espíritu tras dejar el cuerpo sea la resurrección que Jesús vino a enseñar y demostrar; y, cuando vemos cada año la repetición de la conmemoración del aniversario de esta salida [rising] de Jesús desde su cuerpo físico, con todas las falsas creencias y enseñanzas asociadas, somos cada vez más conscientes de la necesidad de que nuestras verdades se den a conocer al mundo.
Por lo tanto, debes trabajar con más ahínco y orar al Padre para que incremente el desarrollo de tu alma, de modo que nuestros mensajes se reciban con mayor rapidez.

Comentarios de Lutero sobre el panfleto swedenborgiano titulado «Dios Encarnado» (28 febrero 1917)
Estoy aquí. Lutero.
Solo deseo decir que, al leer el panfleto que leí contigo, y la descripción y explicación que contiene sobre quién es Dios, son completamente erróneas y blasfemas.
Jesús nunca afirmó ni enseñó, mientras estuvo en la tierra, que fuera Dios; y esto lo digo porque así nos ha instruido sobre ello; y nunca, desde que se convirtió en espíritu, ha hecho tal afirmación. Las enseñanzas de la Nueva Iglesia en este sentido son completamente erróneas y tienden a alejar a la gente de la verdadera concepción de quiénes son Dios y Jesús.
Swedenborg ha conversado a menudo conmigo sobre sus enseñanzas y ha declarado que sus explicaciones sobre Dios no concuerdan con el conocimiento que posee actualmente; afirma que las enseñanzas contenidas en sus libros sobre este tema fueron, en gran medida, el resultado de sus propias especulaciones y de sus esfuerzos por reconciliar lo que consideraba una concepción absurda de la naturaleza y del ser de Dios con la verdadera interpretación de la Biblia. Incapaz de suscribir la doctrina de la Trinidad tal como la explicaba, aceptaba y enseñaba la Iglesia, y siendo un firme creyente en la inspiración bíblica y en la infalibilidad de las verdades religiosas, buscó una exégesis que fuera coherente con la Biblia y, al mismo tiempo, acorde con sus ideas sobre la razón y el sentido común. Pero, como él mismo ahora reconoce, no hizo sino añadir misticismo sobre misticismo, y explicaciones irracionales a explicaciones irracionales, resultando sus enseñanzas más absurdas y difíciles de comprender que las de su propia iglesia.
La doctrina de la Trinidad, como se te ha dicho, no es verdadera y nunca tuvo autoridad alguna en las enseñanzas de Jesús, de los apóstoles o de los escritores bíblicos. Fue simplemente una deducción de algunos de los antiguos padres de la Iglesia, surgida de sus especulaciones y de su deseo de convertir a Jesús en un Dios ─aunque fuera un Dios menor que el Padre─, y al mismo tiempo en un solo ser con el Padre y en parte de una Deidad que debe considerarse como un único Dios, tal y como lo enseñaron los profetas y escritores del Antiguo Testamento: que hay un solo Dios.
Esta doctrina, por supuesto, era absurda y, por lo tanto, [la catalogaron como] uno de los misterios de Dios; sin embargo, se enseñó como una verdad y como algo que el hombre estaba obligado a creer, independientemente de que pudiera comprenderlo o no, lo cual, por supuesto, le resultaba imposible.
Pero la doctrina no fue aceptada por todos los escritores de los primeros tiempos, pues, como sabes, hubo agrias controversias entre estos expositores de lo que ellos consideraron que eran las Escrituras, en torno a la cuestión de quién era Jesús, y su relación con Dios. Pero con el paso de los años, la doctrina de la Trinidad se estableció firmemente como un canon de creencia en la iglesia, y en mi vida terrenal era creída, sin ser cuestionada por la iglesia; y yo también la creía, aunque no podía entenderla.
Ahora bien, Swedenborg era miembro de la iglesia que llevaba mi nombre, y cuya fundación se me atribuía; él creía en sus doctrinas, incluso en cuanto a la Trinidad y la transformación del vino y el pan en la sangre y el cuerpo de Jesús. Perseveró en esta creencia hasta el momento de sus maravillosas visiones del mundo espiritual y su encuentro con los espíritus y ángeles de dicho mundo, incluyendo a Jesús, de quien en sus escritos afirmaba que era Dios, y con quien mantuvo muchas conversaciones, y del que aprendió las verdades espirituales que declaró al mundo.
Como se te ha dicho, en la ejecución de los planes de los Ángeles Celestiales, bajo la dirección de Jesús, Swedenborg fue seleccionado como el instrumento a través del cual debían revelarse las verdades espirituales a la humanidad. Para llevar a cabo dicho plan, se le otorgó el poder de acceder al mundo espiritual mediante sus percepciones espirituales ─o su visión interior [inner sight], como él la llama─; allí pudo observar las condiciones de los espíritus y de los ángeles, y sus entornos, y pudo aprender las verdades superiores mediante el intercambio con ellos. Y efectivamente, vino de la manera indicada y comulgó como él mismo afirma, con la salvedad de que nunca habló con Dios, sino solo con Jesús, a quien erróneamente confundió con Dios. Esto no es de extrañar, pues Jesús era un espíritu tan trascendente en gloria, amor y sabiduría que resultaba casi natural, por así decirlo, que el mortal, ante una experiencia tan nueva e insólita, concibiera a este glorioso Jesús como a Dios mismo. Pero no fue a Dios, sino solo a Jesús, a quien este vidente vio y escuchó.
Teniendo una concepción de este tipo, se puede ver fácilmente que cuando regresaba a su ser mortal ─y esto ocurrió muchas veces─ creía firmemente que Jesús, quien tenía forma e individualidad en el mundo espiritual similares a las que había tenido en la tierra, era en realidad Dios. Por lo tanto, a Swedenborg le resultó fácil rechazar la doctrina de la Trinidad, (y en su lugar proclamar) que Jesús es Dios, manifestado en la carne, y que Dios es Jesús, el Hombre Divino.
Por supuesto, debes comprender que, en el ejercicio de sus facultades como vidente, experimentó dudas y temores de que lo que veía y oía pudiera a veces no ser real; y de que quizá su imaginación ─o lo que en estos tiempos se denomina mente subconsciente─ lo estuviera engañando. Al ser un hombre de mentalidad extraordinaria y convicciones profundas, así como de fe arraigada en las doctrinas de su iglesia, muchas de sus interpretaciones de lo que vio y oyó ─así como las enseñanzas que derivó de ellas─ estuvieron limitadas y coloreadas por su fe y su condición mental preexistentes. Me ha confesado que, desde muchos años antes de su experiencia como vidente, había dudado en mayor o menor medida de la verdad de la Trinidad; la había aceptado sólo como un misterio, y por deferencia a que la iglesia la declaraba una verdad. Sin embargo, tras sus experiencias como tal vidente, al creer firmemente en las declaraciones de la Biblia como palabras infalibles de Dios y estar convencido también de haber visto a Dios en la persona de Jesús, buscó la explicación para estas declaraciones bíblicas y el modo de reconciliarlas con su creencia de que Jesús era Dios; y el resultado fue su doctrina de que Jesús es Dios.
Y así, en muchas otras de sus enseñanzas, basadas en su experiencia en el mundo espiritual, abrazó muchos errores y conceptos erróneos sobre las verdades, hasta tal punto que, como se te ha dicho, su misión, en sus resultados, fue un fracaso, y las verdades que había sido seleccionado para aprender y declarar al mundo nunca se dieron a conocer a la humanidad.
Este fracaso decepcionó a los espíritus que concibieron este plan y en quienes se albergaban las verdades espirituales de Dios, quienes actuaban como instrumentos de Dios en su esfuerzo por darlas a conocer a la humanidad.
Pero será más satisfactorio para ti ─y más convincente para quienquiera que lea las verdades que estás recibiendo de parte de estos mismos espíritus elevados que le seleccionaron como su mensajero─ que Swedenborg venga en persona y explique la dinámica de su misión, así como las causas y detalles de su fracaso al realizar la gran obra que se le había encomendado.
Dice que tiene el consuelo, único entre muchos otros que han fundado iglesias e intentado declarar verdades espirituales sobre las que se han promulgado y creído doctrinas y credos, de que sus seguidores son comparativamente pocos; y, en consecuencia, hay muchos menos mortales que estén siendo engañados por sus enseñanzas. Y puedo apreciar el consuelo que este hecho pueda brindarle, pues mis enseñanzas y creencias, tan falsas como las suyas, son creídas y seguidas por un gran número de mortales, para su propio perjuicio.

Chauncey Giles cambia su creencia sobre Jesús como Dios (28 febrero 1917)
Permíteme escribirte unas líneas, pues me interesa lo que acabas de escribir. Cuando viví en la tierra, era swedenborgiano o «neoeclesiástico» [hombre de la «New Church»], y creía en las doctrinas de esa Iglesia, especialmente en la piedra angular de sus creencias: que Jesús era Dios, el único Dios que debía ser adorado como tal y aceptado como el Dios encarnado, que vino a la tierra, vivió y enseñó entre los hombres la venida de Dios en carne.
Bueno, yo, cuando estuve en la tierra, fui líder o predicador de esa Iglesia, y durante mi ministerio no solo enseñé, sino que escribí muchos panfletos y algunos libros sobre esta doctrina de Dios haciéndose hombre en la forma de Jesús, y sobre muchas otras doctrinas que ahora sé que son falsas.
Y mi autoridad para afirmar que esta doctrina fundamental de la Iglesia es falsa reside en que he visto y hablado con Jesús en el mundo espiritual, y he aprendido que él es solo el espíritu de un mortal, el espíritu más elevado y glorioso de todos los cielos, pero no Dios; y nunca he visto a Dios ni a ningún espíritu que Lo haya visto con los ojos espirituales; aunque Jesús, así como otros de los espíritus más elevados, afirman haberlo visto con las percepciones de sus almas, lo cual debe ser cierto porque Jesús es en gran medida como Dios en esto: no puede mentir.

Desearía poder acercarme a mi gente y hablarles de los errores de sus creencias y de las verdades tal como existen y en la medida en que ahora las conozco; pero no tengo esperanzas de poder hacerlo jamás, pues una de las doctrinas cardinales de esta Iglesia es que, con la muerte de Swedenborg, desapareció toda posibilidad de comunicación entre Dios o sus ángeles y los mortales, en cuanto a verdades espirituales; y que es contrario a la voluntad de Dios que los mortales intenten penetrar el velo que separa los dos mundos.
Cuánto sufrimiento me causan ahora, y arrepentimiento, las creencias que enseñé, pues no veo la manera de remediar el error que cometí ni de encaminar los pensamientos de mis seguidores hacia las sendas que conducen a la verdad y a la certeza del cielo.

Sí, Lutero escribió, y no conozco al otro espíritu, pero no me cabe duda de que es quien dice ser. Parecía muy sincero y tenía mucho afán por escribir; y al ver que era un buen espíritu con un mensaje, lo dejamos escribir, y se sintió mejor al hacerlo.
Swedenborg estuvo aquí esta noche y está muy deseoso de escribir, y pronto lo hará, ya que siente que debe escribir un mensaje sobre el tema que te ha interesado recientemente.

Nota sobre Chauncey Giles (1819–1893)
Chauncey Giles fue, probablemente, el «evangelista» más efectivo y carismático del movimiento suedenborgiano (la New Church o Nueva Jerusalén) en el siglo XIX. A diferencia de otros líderes más académicos o místicos, Giles tenía un don innato para la oratoria, lo cual le permitió traducir la densa y laberíntica metafísica de Swedenborg a un lenguaje accesible y esperanzador para la clase media estadounidense de la época.
Una anécdota reveladora: Giles era conocido por su capacidad de mantener una calma imperturbable incluso en sus debates teológicos más intensos. Se cuenta que, en una ocasión, un crítico le reprochó que sus enseñanzas sobre la «correspondencia» entre lo físico y lo espiritual eran una fantasía infantil. Giles, sin levantar la voz, le respondió: «Si el mundo que ves es el único real, me compadezco de tu soledad; si es solo una sombra de lo que está por venir, bienvenido a la conversación».
Su obra más famosa, The Nature of Spirit and of Man as a Spiritual Being, fue un éxito de ventas y sirvió como «puerta de entrada» para miles de personas que, al igual que Swedenborg, sentían que el dogma cristiano tradicional era una coraza demasiado rígida para una realidad espiritual que ellos sentían mucho más viva, dinámica y personal. En el contexto de los mensajes de Padgett, su presencia es interesante porque representa a ese sector del suedenborgianismo que intentó «humanizar» y «socializar» la visión de Swedenborg, preparándola —irónicamente— para que, al ver sus propios límites intelectuales, pudiera ser corregida más tarde por las revelaciones que estamos estudiando.

Well, I am sorry to say that my work was a failure; and that, because of that fact, I have suffered very much since I became a spirit. I know now that what I attempted to do was injured by my preconceived ideas based on the orthodox teachings, and that I did not carry out the work of the great mission that I had been selected to perform.
May the Father bless you with His Love.

Swedenborg – Did not know of the Divine Love as contradistinguished from the natural love that was bestowed on him at his creation. (8 Apr 1917)
I AM HERE, Swedenborg.
I merely want to say that I have been reading my work as you read, and that I now realize how many statements of error and untruth I made in that work. The errors are so many that it will take a longer time than I have tonight in which to give you a bare outline of them. But I will soon come and write you, and hope that you can give me an evening when I can write without limitation of time.
Since I have been in the spirit world, I have found that there are so many statements in my writings of my experiences while in the mortal, when I was permitted in my spirit – or as I then said, interiors – to enter the spirit world, that were not truly conceived or interpreted, that it is absolutely necessary that I should correct and describe in accordance with what I now know of the truth, and especially is this necessary as I have on earth a large number of mortals who believe in my teachings and are trying to follow them in their lives and deeds. So, you will appreciate my anxiety to be permitted to write. Tonight, I will not write more.
Well, I am sorry to say, that I did not know of the Divine Love, which by its reception into the soul made angels of men, and recreated them, so that their souls became in their very substance, Divine. I did not know of this Love as contradistinguished from the love that was bestowed upon man at his creation, and which, in itself, has nothing of the Divine. No, I was ignorant of this and never learned it in the spirit world in my visits to that world, nor in my conversation with spirits.
I know now that no matter how great is the ruling love of a man for falsity and evil when he enters the hells, he will have the opportunity to have that love changed, and that ultimately the loves of all who are in the hells will be changed into the love for good – in some instances into the Love of the Divine, and in others, to the purification of their natural loves to that which will make them perfect men.
These are some of the things that I desire to write about, and there are many others equally erroneous.
I am in the Celestial Spheres, and of course, am an angel of God and the possessor of His Divine Love that has caused my soul to become Divine, and immortality to become to me a thing of understanding and possession.
I will stop now, and with my love and the blessings of God and all the Divine angels, I will say good night.

Luke – Affirms that Swedenborg wrote. Importance of errors being corrected in his writings. (8 Apr 1917)
I AM HERE, Luke.
I come to tell you that you must not doubt that Swedenborg wrote to you, and what you wrote, or rather, received, in answer to your questions, he actually wrote. We are all desirous that he shall write you on the subjects that he has expressed a desire to write upon, for many of the teachings and doctrines that are contained in his earthly writings are erroneous and must be corrected, for they are being studied and believed in by many mortals, and all to their leading away from the truth.
The one great error or untruth that must be corrected is his teaching, that Jesus is God. This is blasphemous and abhorrent to all the angelic spirits, and more so to the Master than to any other, and for the correction of this, Swedenborg must write. Well, I will not write more tonight, except to say this, that another anniversary of the resurrection of the Master, as it is believed, has come, and men are worshipping Jesus as God, and sending their praises and thanks to him as the great redeemer of the world by his death and «resurrection», while as you know, his death had very little to do with that redemption, and his resurrection was not the resurrection that he taught could be the experience and possession of all mankind.(Note: Read Resurrection Vol. I, pages 94 to 107 by St. Paul and Jesus.)
It is pitiable and destructive to the truth for men to believe and teach that the mere resurrection of the spirit from the body is the resurrection that Jesus came to teach and demonstrate; and when we see each year the repetition of the observance of the anniversary of this rising of Jesus from his physical body, and all the false beliefs and teachings, we realize more and more the necessity for our truths being made known to the world.
So you must work harder and pray to the Father to increase your soul development so that our messages may be more rapidly received.
Remember what John said a few nights ago and believe, for the promises then made will soon be realized by you. I will come soon and write a message.

Well dear, I come to say that Swedenborg actually wrote you, as I realize that you had a doubt come into your mind as to whether he really wrote. He actually answered your questions in his own words, and not any thought contained in his answers came from your mind. Luke also wrote, and you must believe.

Luther comments on Swedenborgian pamphlet entitled «Incarnate God» (28 Feb 1917)
I AM HERE. Luther.
I merely desire to say that as you read the pamphlet I read with you, and the description and explanation therein contained as to who God is, are entirely erroneous and blasphemous.
Jesus never claimed or taught, while on earth, that he was God, and this I say because he has so instructed us, and he never since becoming a spirit has made any such claim, and the teachings of the New Church in this particular are all wrong and tend to lead men away from the true conception of who God and Jesus both are.
Swedenborg has often conversed with me about his teachings and declared that his explanations as to God are not in accord with the knowledge that he now has, and that the teachings as contained in his books upon this subject were the results very largely of his own speculations, and the results of his endeavors in trying to reconcile what he thought was an absurd conception of the nature and being of God with the true interpretation of the Bible. He could not accept the doctrine of the Trinity, as explained and accepted and taught by the Church, and hence, being a believer in the inspiration of the Bible and its infallibility of religious truths he sought some exegesis that might be consistent with the Bible, and at the same time in consonance with his ideas of reason and common sense. But, as he now says, he added mysticism to mysticism, and irrational explanations to irrational explanations, and the result was that his teachings were more absurd and more difficult to understand than were the teachings of his church.
The doctrine of the Trinity, as you have been told, is not true, and never had any authority in the teachings of Jesus or those of the Apostles and Bible writers, and was merely the deduction of some of the old fathers of the church, arising from their speculations and desire to make of Jesus a God, though a lesser God than the Father, and at the same time one with the Father and a part of the Godhead that must be considered as being only one God, and as taught by the Old Testament writers and prophets that there is only one God.
This doctrine, of course, was absurd and, hence, was one of the mysteries of God, but, nevertheless was taught as a truth and incumbent upon man to believe whether they could understand it or not, which of course, they could not.
But the doctrine was not accepted by all the writers of the early days, for as you know, there were bitter controversies among these expounders of what they supposed to be the scriptures, upon the question as to who Jesus was, and his relation to God. But as the years went by the doctrine of the Trinity became firmly established as a canon of belief in the church, and in my time on earth it was believed, and not questioned by the church; and I believed it also, although I could not understand it.
Now, Swedenborg was a member of the church that bore my name and which I was credited with having founded, and believed in its doctrines, even as to the Trinity, and the actual transformation of the wine and bread into the blood and body of Jesus, and he continued in this belief up to the time of his wonderful visions of the spirit world and his experience in meeting the spirits and angels of that world, including Jesus, whom he in his writings claimed to be God, and with whom he had many conversations and from whom he learned the spiritual truths that he declared to the world.
As you have been told, in the working out of the plans of the Celestial Angels, under the leadership of Jesus, Swedenborg was selected as the instrumentality through whom the spiritual truths should be revealed to mankind, and in carrying out that plan, power was given to him to come in his spirit perceptions or his inner sight, as he calls it, into the spirit world and there see the conditions of spirits and angels, and also of their environments, and learn the higher truths from conversations with spirits and angels. And he did come in the manner indicated and communed as he has claimed, except that he never talked with God, but only with Jesus, who he misconceived to be God; and this cannot be wondered at, for Jesus was a spirit, so transcendent in glory and love and wisdom, that it was almost natural, as I may say, that the mortal in his new and unusual experience should conceive this glorious Jesus to be God Himself. But it was not God, only Jesus, that this seer saw and listened to.
Having a conception of this kind, you can readily see that when he came into his mortal self again, and many times this occurred, he firmly believed that Jesus, who had form and individuality in the spirit world similar to what he had when on earth, was actually God, and it therefore became easy for Swedenborg to reject the doctrine of the Trinity, (and in its place proclaim) Jesus is God, manifested in the flesh, and God is Jesus, the Divine Man.
Of course, you must understand, that in the exercise of this seership, he experienced the doubts and fears, that at times what he saw and heard might not be things of actuality, and that possibly his imagination, or as in these latter days, what is called the subconscious mind, was deceiving him, and being a man of extraordinary mentality and strong convictions, as well as established faith in the doctrines of the church to which he belonged, many of his interpretations of what he saw and heard, and his teachings therefrom, were limited and flavored by his existing mental condition and faith.He has told me that for many years before his experience as seer, he had to a more or less extent doubted the truth of the Trinity, and accepted it only as a mystery, and because the church declared it to be a truth, and that after his experiences as such seer, believing in the statements of the Bible as the infallible words of God, and also believing that he had seen God in the person of Jesus, he sought an explanation of these Bible statements and a reconciliation of them with his belief that Jesus was God, and the result was his declared doctrine that Jesus is God.
And so in many other of his teachings, based upon his experience in the spirit world, he embraced many errors and misconceptions of the truths, and to such an extent that, as you have been told, his mission, in its results, was a failure, and the truths that he had been selected to learn and declare to the world were never made known to mankind.
This failure was disappointing to the spirits who conceived this plan and in whom were lodged the spiritual truths of God, and who were acting as God’s instruments in their endeavor to make them known to humanity.
But it will be more satisfactory to you, and convincing to whomsoever may read the truths that you are receiving from these same high spirits that selected him, as their messenger, to have Swedenborg come himself, and explain the workings of his mission, and the causes and particulars of his failure in doing the great work that had been assigned him to do.
He says that he has one consolation that many who have founded churches and attempted to declare spiritual truths upon which doctrines and creeds have been promulgated and believed in, and that is that his followers are so comparatively few in numbers, and consequently, so many less mortals are being deceived by his teachings. And I can appreciate the consolation that he may have in this fact, for my teachings and beliefs that are false as his are false, are believed in and followed by a very large number of mortals, to their injury.
Well, I am glad for the opportunity to write you tonight, and I am still waiting for the chance to finish my message to my people on the errors of continuing in my teachings, and the necessity for them to become undeceived, and learn the truths that are now being declared to mankind.

Chauncey Giles changes his belief about Jesus being God. (28 Feb 1917)
Let me write you a line, for I am interested in what has just been written you, for when I lived on earth, I was a Swedenborgian or New Churchman, and believed in the doctrines of that Church, and especially in the corner stone of its beliefs, and that is that Jesus was God, and the only God to be worshipped as such and accepted as the incarnate God, who came to earth and lived and taught among men the coming of God into the flesh.
Well, I, when on earth was a leader or preacher in that Church, and during the course of my ministry I not only taught but wrote many pamphlets and some books upon this doctrine of God becoming man in the form of Jesus, and on many other doctrines, that I now know to be untrue.
And my authority for saying that this fundamental doctrine of the Church is untrue, is that I have seen and talked with Jesus in the spirit world, and learned that he is only the spirit of a mortal, but the highest and most glorious spirit in all the heavens, and is not God; and I have never seen God nor any spirit who has seen Him with the spirit eyes, though Jesus and others of the highest spirits say that they have seen Him with their soul perceptions, which must be true because Jesus is so much like God in this: that he cannot tell a lie.
But I know that there is a God, and my knowledge is based on certainty, but the basis of this certainty I cannot explain to you, as you could not comprehend my explanation. But God loves (lives?) and rules and loves, and is present with us and with you in some or many of His attributes, and Jesus is not this God.
I wish that I could come to my people and tell them of the errors of their beliefs, and the truths as they exist and to the extent as now known to me, but I have no hope of ever being able to do so, for one of the cardinal doctrines of the Church is, that with the passing of Swedenborg passed the possibility of all communications between God or his angels and mortals as to spiritual truths, and that it is contrary to God’s will that mortals should attempt to penetrate the veil that separates the two worlds.
How such beliefs as I taught now cause me suffering and regret, for I see no way of remedying the wrong that I did, and of turning the thoughts of my followers into the paths that lead to truth and the certainty of heaven.
As this is my first attempt to communicate, I am somewhat tired and must stop. But I thank you for the opportunity, and hope that some time I may have the privilege of again writing. Notwithstanding my erroneous beliefs, I have in my soul some of the Father’s Divine Love, that enables me to sign myself,

Yes, Luther wrote, and the other spirit I don’t know, but I have no doubt that he is whom he represents himself to be. He seemed to be in much earnestness and was very anxious to write, and seeing that he was a good spirit with a message, we let him write, and he felt better by having done so.
Swedenborg was here tonight and is very anxious to write and soon he will as he feels that he must write a message on the subject that you have been interested in recently.
