Estoy aquí, tu viejo amigo G. R.
Sí, soy yo; y me alegra poder escribirte de nuevo. Le dije a tu esposa que deseaba escribirte para contarte sobre mi progreso en asuntos espirituales y, como tienes la amabilidad de darme esta oportunidad, intentaré contarte cómo se me abrieron los ojos a las cosas del espíritu y el corazón al Amor de Dios.
Bien, como sabes, cuando comencé a escribirte por primera vez, no creía exactamente en Dios, ni en Jesús, ni en sus enseñanzas, salvo en lo relativo a la condición moral de los hombres. Cuando empezaste a hablarme sobre estas cosas espirituales, pensé que simplemente me decías lo que habías aprendido en tu iglesia o en la escuela dominical, y que aquello solo estaba destinado a hombres y mujeres sin capacidad de pensar por sí mismos, aptos únicamente para aceptar lo que los predicadores les dijeran. Así pues, como ves, mi mente no estaba en una disposición muy receptiva como para hacerme creer que lo que me decías tuviera fundamento alguno en la realidad o en la verdad. Para mí, Jesús era exactamente igual que cualquier otro hombre que hubiera alcanzado elevadas concepciones de la verdad; pero no era más que un mero hombre, en el sentido de que lo que intentaba enseñar lo había aprendido mediante el estudio y la meditación, o a través de alguna fuente terrenal que yo desconocía. En todo caso, yo creía que sus enseñanzas no eran fruto de la inspiración ni procedían de una fuente distinta de aquella de la que la humanidad recibe cualquier otra información respecto a las cosas de la naturaleza o del espíritu.
Ahora bien, como seguías diciéndome que estaba equivocado y que existe una Fuente de la que emana todo bien, distinta de la mera mente o consciencia del hombre, comencé a reflexionar sobre el asunto. Y cuando miré a mi alrededor y vi que tu madre y tu esposa ─quienes afirmaban haber recibido ese Amor de Dios que tú insistías en que me esperaba─ eran tan bellas y felices, mientras que yo y los míos no éramos muy bellos ni éramos en absoluto felices, empecé a indagar la causa. Y cuando me dijiste que su condición ─me refiero a la de tu madre y tu esposa─ se debía a ese Amor de Dios, les pedí que me explicaran la naturaleza de dicho Amor y la manera en que lo habían obtenido. Y tu madre, bendita sea su alma, se tomó grandes molestias para instruirme en estas cosas.
Y cuando supe que la oración era el único camino hacia este Amor, y te vi orando por mí con todo tu corazón y con gran fervor, comencé a orar también; aunque debo confesar que mis oraciones no iban acompañadas de mucha fe. Sin embargo, continué orando, y cada noche, cuando orabas por mí y por los muchos otros que estaban contigo orando, intentaba ejercitar toda la fe posible, y oraba pidiendo más fe. Esto continuó durante un tiempo, y un día vino a mí tu abuela ─quien es un espíritu maravilloso en bondad y hermosura─ y me dijo quién era y que estaba muy interesada en mí, tanto por ti como por mí mismo, y comenzó a revelarme la gran eficacia de la oración. Me aseguró que si tan solo intentaba creer y le rogaba a Dios que me ayudara a creer, Él respondería a mis oraciones, y pronto descubriría que, con mis sinceros esfuerzos, la fe me llegaría, y con la fe llegaría este Amor a mi corazón, y con este Amor llegarían la felicidad y la alegría.
Así pues, la escuché e intenté creer que lo que me decía tenía que ser cierto, y que se interesaba por mí y solo deseaba mi felicidad. Continué orando, como dije, y un día, tras haber recibido una fe considerable, me encontré con Jesús; él me habló de las maravillas que su Padre había preparado para mí, si tan solo creía y le pedía que me las concediera.
Jesús era tan hermoso y amoroso que no pude resistir la influencia que me invadió; y entonces mi fe creció, y oré con toda mi alma y con todo mi corazón. Finalmente, me llegó la luz y, con ella, tal afluencia de Amor como jamás imaginé que pudiera existir, ni en la tierra ni en el mundo espiritual. Pero me llegó, y me sentí como si fuera un espíritu nuevo, y experimenté una felicidad como nunca antes había sentido. Y entonces vino esa querida madre tuya y se regocijó conmigo, y también tu hermosa esposa, que tanto se había esforzado por animarme a buscar este Amor.
¡Oh, Padgett, te digo que en todo el vasto universo de Dios no hay nada comparable a este Amor del Padre! Permíteme decir que, en toda mi vida, cuando solo me guiaba el intelecto, no hubo nada comparable a lo que me llegó con esta afluencia del Amor.
Ahora me encuentro en el tercer cielo con muchos espíritus hermosos y felices. Tu madre y tu esposa están más arriba, y son tan bellas y buenas que, cuando estoy en su compañía, siento que llegaré a ser un hombre mucho más feliz si procuro seguirlas. Tu padre también ha progresado, al igual que el profesor Salyards.
Pues bien, mi alma está ahora llena de este Amor. Mi mente ha elevado sus pensamientos y no se inclina a pensar en cosas meramente intelectuales. Pues te digo que, si bien el conocimiento de todas las leyes de Dios y de los aparentes misterios de la naturaleza es deseable, el conocimiento de este Amor de Dios es incomparablemente superior; no solo es más necesario, sino también más deseable. No cambiaría las sensaciones que me brinda el poseer este Amor por todos los deleites que pudieran surgir del descubrimiento de la ley más prodigiosa e importante del funcionamiento de la naturaleza.
Que este Amor sea lo primero y, entonces, las demás adquisiciones solo ayudarán a mostrar al espíritu que Dios es un Dios de Sabiduría y Poder, además de Amor. Pero tal como has leído: «El amor es el cumplimiento de la ley»; nada más lo es. Y quien posee todo el conocimiento y la sabiduría sin este Amor es verdaderamente pobre.
Jesús es el más maravilloso de todos los espíritus, tanto en Amor como en el conocimiento de los atributos del Padre. Él es el más grande, y sabe que los planes del Padre para salvar y redimir a la humanidad son tal como él enseña. Por lo tanto, debes escucharlo y creer. Voy a intentar aprender más de sus enseñanzas y, cuando lo haga, te haré saber lo que aprenda.
Jesús me parece el ser plenamente sublime; no tiene rival, y nadie que lo vea, si posee algo de este Amor en su alma, puede dejar de reconocer que es el verdadero Jesús de la Biblia y el hijo más perfecto de su Padre. Comprendí esto solo después de que este Amor llegara a mí; y parece que los espíritus que no poseen este Amor no se dan cuenta de quién es Jesús, ni de cuán maravilloso y glorioso es. Esto te puede parecer extraño, pero es un hecho. Solo cuando el espíritu experimenta un despertar del amor de su alma por Dios, Jesús se manifiesta como su gran hermano y maestro de este Gran Amor del Padre.
No debes permitir que las cosas de la vida material te lleven a pensar que tienes que esperar hasta llegar al mundo espiritual para recibir este Gran Amor; pues te digo que aquel cuya alma se abre a la afluencia de este Amor mientras está en la tierra es un hombre mucho más afortunado que quien espera hasta el final de su vida terrenal. Si tan solo hubiera tomado conciencia de este Amor estando en la tierra, me habría ahorrado muchas horas de sufrimiento e infelicidad tras convertirme en espíritu. Mi propia experiencia refleja tan fielmente lo que muchos sufren y sufrirán que, si pudiera proclamar a cada hombre en la tierra la necesidad de poseer este Amor mientras vive en ella, lo haría con todas mis fuerzas.
Podría contarte mi experiencia al trascender, pero no creo que sea conveniente hacerlo esta noche, pues tomaría demasiado tiempo y requeriría más fuerzas de las que tienes en este momento. De todos modos, pronto lo haré en detalle.
Me alegra tanto haber sido redimido por este Gran Amor, por las enseñanzas de Jesús, por la ayuda de los espíritus de tu familia y también por tus oraciones, que no puedo expresar la magnitud de mi gozo. Nada en todo el cielo ni en la tierra se compara con el sentimiento de alegría que embarga a un alma cuando comprende que es una con el Padre en Amor y poder.
Sí; ellos saben y te acompañan cada noche mientras oras. Aunque no parecen comprender del todo que puedas ayudarlos de alguna manera, aun así experimentan una sensación peculiar cuando oras y los demás oran contigo. No dejes de orar por ellos.
Te digo que eres un hombre extraordinariamente bendecido al tener una madre y una abuela cristianas tan amorosas que oran por ti y velan por ti durante toda tu vida. Si todos los hombres tuvieran padres cristianos que les enseñaran y les mostraran el Camino hacia este Amor de Dios a medida que crecen desde la infancia hasta la madurez, se evitarían muchos momentos de sufrimiento e infelicidad, y muchos espíritus llegarían a esta vida con muchos menos pecados que expiar.

La Sra. Helen Padgett describe el método que usa para comunicar sus pensamientos a través del Sr. Padgett (8 diciembre 1914)
Estoy aquí. Helen.
Déjame decirte que solo te causarás infelicidad intentando comprender por completo la manera en que te escribo; pues no puedes hacerlo, ya que no eres capaz de ver mi método y yo no puedo explicártelo plenamente. Sin embargo, haré todo lo posible por explicártelo.
Cuando tomas el lápiz, ejerzo todo mi poder para moverlo de modo que escriba exactamente lo que pienso; pero, para poder hacer eso, tengo que dejar que mis pensamientos pasen a través de tu cerebro. Tú no piensas, sino que simplemente dejas que los pensamientos atraviesen tu cerebro, y el movimiento del lápiz es causado por el funcionamiento de tu cerebro en conjunción con mi poder, el cual ejerzo sobre el lápiz. Así pues, como ves, tú no originas el pensamiento, sino que meramente lo transmites a la mano, a la cual guío en conformidad con mi pensamiento. Tú no tienes más que ver con lo que queda escrito de lo que tiene que ver un cable eléctrico con la transmisión de un mensaje desde la persona que lo envía.
Déjame explicarlo de otra manera. Cuando concibo un pensamiento, lo hago pasar a través de tu cerebro hacia tu mano, y mi poder para mover tu mano entra en acción, de la misma manera que, cuando tú concibes un pensamiento, tu propio poder para mover tu mano entra en acción.
Mis pensamientos no son los tuyos; y, cuando pienso, tu mente capta el pensamiento, pero no lo crea. Así que debes creer que soy yo quien escribe y no tú, pues escribo pensamientos que tú no podrías escribir ni aunque lo intentaras. ¿Qué te parece esto como prueba de garantía?
Pero, hablando en serio: tú no podrías escribir las cosas que yo escribo sin reflexionar profundamente sobre los distintos temas, pues algunos de ellos no te son familiares, tal como has dicho a menudo. Abandona la idea de que estás escribiendo cosas que emanan de lo que a veces llaman tu mente subconsciente, pues no tienes ninguna mente subconsciente, y los filósofos que enseñan semejante idea desconocen las leyes de la mente. La mente es tan solo la evidencia espiritual de pensamientos que se congregan en el cerebro, pero que en realidad no forman parte de la entidad material a la que los «sabios» llaman el yo o mente subconsciente (sic). Tal cosa no existe, y cuando hacen descansar sus explicaciones de las cosas que no pueden justificar en la afirmación de que la mente subconsciente es la que proporciona estos pensamientos, están completamente equivocados. Solo el cerebro material proporciona pensamientos que proyecta [puts forth] a partir de la observación de los sentidos, o bien a partir de las facultades que entran en acción cuando la razón se convierte en la base de los pensamientos.
No soy una gran expositora de estos temas, pero he intentado explicarlo de la forma más clara posible. Sí, te digo esto partiendo de mi propia observación y comprensión de estas cosas. Cuando recibas comunicaciones del Sr. Riddle, él podrá explicarte de una forma más completa y satisfactoria las leyes que rigen estos asuntos, y debes permitirle que te escriba pronto.
Estoy estudiando las leyes de las ciencias físicas y psíquicas para poder ayudarte en tus investigaciones cuando busques la verdadera relación entre los espíritus y los mortales, así como las leyes que rigen estas comunicaciones. Sí, mis estudios incluyen la investigación de las leyes que gobiernan la clarividencia y las comunicaciones inspiradas. En algún momento tendrás la oportunidad de experimentar cada una de estas fases, y quiero estar en condiciones de ayudarte en una medida que te sirva para llegar a conclusiones correctas, y que ayude a otros a comprender las leyes que rigen estos asuntos.
Así pues, como ves, tu esposa te ama tanto que está dispuesta a intentar aprender estas cosas ─que se consideran reservadas únicamente para las mentes masculinas─ para ayudarte a comprenderlas con mayor claridad.
Sin embargo, aunque haga esto, no cejaré en mi empeño por aprender plenamente aquellas cosas que me brinden una comprensión más clara de las verdades espirituales que conducen más cerca de Dios y de Su Amor. Estas son las absolutamente necesarias; las demás son importantes, pero no imprescindibles para que un alma, tarde o temprano, alcance el conocimiento que la hace una con el Padre. El Amor de Dios, que sobrepasa todo entendimiento, es la única gran cosa que se debe aprender y poseer.
Mi hogar es ahora tan hermoso que mi felicidad va más allá de lo que te podría expresar. Tú también serás feliz cuando vengas, pues estoy llenando mi hogar de pensamientos tan bellos y de tanto amor que, cuando llegues, te preguntarás cómo tu humilde esposa ha podido acumular tanta belleza y llenar la casa de tanto amor.
Sí, a medida que recibo más del Amor de Dios en mi alma, mi hogar se vuelve más hermoso; solo que no necesito estar en él para tener ese Amor conmigo. Me acompaña en todo momento, y cuando estoy en mi hogar, este se convierte en un reflejo de ese Amor. El hogar no es hermoso si el Amor no está presente; así que, como ves, la belleza del hogar depende de la existencia del Amor. Mi alma es la creadora de mi hogar, y si el alma no es hermosa, el hogar tampoco puede serlo.
Cuando dejo mi hogar para venir a verte, este permanece igual; pues aunque mi alma esté conmigo ─al igual que el Amor que la hace hermosa─, la morada conserva en tal grado el reflejo o, como podrías decir, la atmósfera de ese Amor, que su belleza no disminuye ni se deteriora por mi ausencia temporal. Así pues, como ves, el hogar posee una permanencia, si bien depende del alma para recibir su belleza y encanto. Mi hogar aún no es perfecto; sin embargo, a medida que yo crezca en el Amor de Dios, alcanzará una mayor perfección: cuanto más Amor tengo, más hermoso es el hogar.
Todos dependemos del grado de amor en nuestras almas para la apariencia de nuestros hogares.
Esfuérzate por obtener todo este Amor que te sea posible y, si logras obtener tanto como yo, serás uno conmigo y compartiremos un mismo hogar. Si no lo logras, tendré que esperar a que lo consigas antes de que podamos vivir juntos como uno solo. Así que intenta obtener todo el Amor de Dios que puedas. Si tan solo entregaras tus pensamientos a las cosas espirituales y abrieras tu alma a la afluencia de este Amor, orando con todos los anhelos de tu alma, podrías progresar tan rápido como yo. Por lo tanto, ama lo suficiente y desea estar conmigo lo suficiente como para intentar, con todo tu corazón, obtener este Amor.

NOTAS
Mi petición para dar pie a la nota
Pido una nota temática comparando con alguna otra descripción espiritista-espiritualista del funcionamiento de la escritura automática; y quizá con alguna otra técnica y observaciones que aporten luz sobre esta «mera instrumentalidad», sobre la cualidad del médium necesaria, así como la necesaria quizá «sutileza» de los espíritus; aunque espíritus los hay de muchas condiciones en cuanto a su alma y su progreso, y, a veces, parece que no tienen por qué ser muy brillantes para usar medios instrumentalmente, digamos. Pero, para hacerlo con precisión, claridad, etc., sí se necesitará eso.
Además, tenemos el ejemplo dramático de las invocaciones de espíritus «al azar», que parece que a veces, al tener éxito, la gente se lleva sorpresas, en cuanto que estos espíritus pueden querer transmitir enfado, etc., y pueden a veces hacerlo a través de la influencia ejercida sobre un grupo ─por ejemplo haciendo la ouija, etc., al parecer─.
Nota Temática Comparativa: La Instrumentalidad Mediúmnica y la Escritura Automática
La mecánica de la «mera instrumentalidad» en Helen Padgett y Allan Kardec
En este conjunto de textos, Helen Padgett describe una mecánica muy concreta de la escritura automática (o mediúmnica psicográfica): el espíritu no toma posesión física completa de la mano del médium como un títere mecánico, ni tampoco dicta palabras como quien lee un texto al oído. Helen explica un modelo de intersección neuro-espiritual:
1. El espíritu proyecta sus pensamientos a través del cerebro físico del médium.
2. El cerebro no crea la idea, pero actúa como el conector o cable eléctrico que transmite la orden motora a la mano.
3. El espíritu aplica su propia «fuerza o poder» en conjunción con la actividad cerebral para trazar las palabras.
Esta explicación coincide notablemente con la teoría que Allan Kardec expone en El Libro de los Médiums (Cap. XV y XVI) sobre la psicografía intuitiva y semimecánica:
─ Kardec señala que en la psicografía semimecánica o intuitiva, el espíritu actúa sobre el periespíritu (el cuerpo fluido/energético) del médium, el cual a su vez actúa sobre el sistema nervioso central.
─ El médium no es una máquina inerte; su mente sirve de filtro o puente conductor. Por ello, Kardec utiliza con frecuencia la misma metáfora que Helen: el médium es como el hilo telegráfico, mientras que el espíritu es el operador al otro lado de la línea.
La cualidad del médium y la «sutileza» de los espíritus
La analogía del cable o canal exige comprender que la pureza y preparación del médium determinan la fidelidad de la transmisión:
─ Resistencia del canal: Si el médium está inquieto, saturado de ideas preconcebidas o preocupado por la vida material (como Helen le reprocha cariñosamente a Ned cuando le pide que no agote sus fuerzas o no busque comprenderlo todo intelectualmente), el canal ofrece «resistencia eléctrica» o interferencia.
─ Afinidad vibratoria: Para comunicar verdades elevadas sobre el Amor Divino o leyes psíquicas complejas, se requiere que el médium tenga una mente educada o una vibración moral receptiva. Sin embargo, como bien señalas, para el mero uso «instrumental» no se requiere que los espíritus sean brillantes: espíritus errantes, poco evolucionados o bromistas pueden manipular fácilmente un lápiz o una tabla Ouija si el canal está abierto y sin protección.
─ La necesidad de espíritus elevados: Para transmitir conceptos abstractos con precisión, nitidez sintáctica y ausencia de contradicciones, el espíritu comunicante debe poseer un gran dominio sobre la energía psíquica (fuerza de voluntad y fluido periespiritual) y el médium debe estar en una disposición de humildad, pasividad mental y elevación moral.
Peligros de la invocación indiscriminada y la Ouija (Espíritus «al azar»)
El contraste entre la experiencia de James Padgett y las prácticas populares como la Ouija ilustra de forma dramática el peligro de la falta de armonización espiritual:
En cuanto al factor apertura:
─ En la sesión de Padgett vemos una apertura elevada mediante la oración sincera, pidiendo el Amor Divino.
─ En el caso de una invocación más al azar, o digamos, ouija común: la apertura sería más bien indiscriminada, guiada por la curiosidad, el juego o el morbo.
En cuanto a la sintonización:
─ Padgett: El canal atrae a seres de las esferas superiores (Helen, la madre, Jesús).
─ Sesión «al azar»: Al no haber filtro moral ni oración, atrae a espíritus del plano bajo o terrestre.
En cuanto a la influencia ejercida:
─ Padgett: la influencia sería más bien de paz, paz interior, afluencia de amor, claridad intelectual.
─ Sesión «al azar»: Ruidos, frustración, transmisión de enfado, mentiras, confusión colectiva o fascinación.
Cuando un grupo de personas realiza una invocación a ciegas o sin preparación espiritual, crea una «batería fluídica» o fuerza colectiva en el ambiente. Los espíritus de baja escala vibratoria, que están muy cerca del plano material y poseen una fuerte carga emocional no resuelta (ira, despecho, confusión), aprovechan con enorme facilidad esa energía disponible. Dado que el canal es neutro pero la puerta se abre sin custodia, estos espíritus pueden llegar a manipular el vaso, la aguja o la mano del médium con una fuerza brusca y dramática, proyectando su estado mental perturbado sobre el grupo.
Frente a esto, el texto de Helen Padgett enfatiza que la verdadera «clave» de la comunicación clara con el plano elevado no radica en la curiosidad ni en el intelecto técnico, sino en el despertar del alma mediante el Amor Divino, el cual actúa como un blindaje de luz que repele a las entidades bajas y afina el canal para la verdad trascendente.

I AM HERE, your old friend G. R. –
Yes it is I, and I am glad to be able to write to you again. I told your wife that I desired to write and tell you of my progress in spiritual matters, and as you are kind enough to give me the opportunity, I will try to tell you how my eyes were opened to the things of the spirit, and my heart to the Love of God.
Well, as you know, when I first commenced to write to you, I did not exactly believe in a God or Jesus or his teachings, except as they related to the moral condition of men. When you first commenced to talk to me about these spiritual things, I thought that you were merely telling me the things that you had learned in your church or Sunday school, and that they were only intended for men and women of no capacity to think for themselves, and suited only to receive what the preachers might tell them. So, you see, I was not in a very receptive condition of mind to enable me to believe that what you told me had any foundation in fact or in truth. Jesus, to me, was just the same as any other man who had received large conceptions of the truth; but he was only a mere man, in the sense that what he attempted to teach he had learned by study and meditation, or through some worldly source that I did not know of. At any rate, I believed that his teachings were not the result of inspiration, or derived from a source any different from what mankind received other information as to things of nature, or of spirit. Well, as you continued to tell me that I was mistaken, and that there is a Source from which all good flows, other than the mere mind or conscience of man, I began to think about the matter. And when I looked around me and saw that your mother and wife – who claimed that they had received this Love of God which you insisted was waiting for me to obtain – were so beautiful and happy, while I and my folks were not very beautiful and not at all happy, I began to inquire the cause. And when you told me that their, I mean your mother’s and wife’s, condition was due to this Love of God, I asked them to tell me about the nature of this Love, and the way in which they obtained It. And your mother, bless her soul, took great pains to instruct me in these things.
And, when I learned that prayer was the only way to this Love, and saw you praying for me with all your heart and in great earnestness, I commenced to pray also; but I must confess that my prayers were not accompanied with much faith. But I continued to pray, and every night when you prayed for me and for the many others who were with you praying, I tried to exercise all the faith possible, and prayed for more faith. This continued for some time, and one day your grandmother, who is a most wonderful spirit in goodness and beauty, came to me and said that she was your grandmother and was very much interested in me, on your account as well as on my own, and commenced to unfold to me the great efficacy of prayer. She assured me that if I would only try to believe, and pray to God to help me believe, He would answer my prayers; and I would soon find that with my earnest efforts, faith would come to me, and with faith would come this Love into my heart, and with this Love would come happiness and joy.
So I listened to her, and tried to believe that what she told me must be true, and that she was interested in me and desired only my happiness. I continued to pray, as I said, and one day after I had received some considerable faith, I met Jesus, and he told me of the wonderful things that his Father had prepared for me, if I would only believe and ask Him to give them to me. Jesus was so very beautiful and loving that I could not resist the influence which came over me; and then my faith increased, and I prayed with all my heart and soul. At last, light came to me, and with it, such an inflowing of Love as I never dreamed could exist, either in the earth or in the spirit world. But it came to me and I felt as if I were a new spirit, and such happiness came as I never experienced before. And then that dear mother of yours came and rejoiced with me, and also your beautiful wife who had tried so hard to induce me to seek for this Love.
Oh, Padgett, I tell you that in all the wide universe of God there is nothing to compare to this Love of the Father. Let me say, that in all my life, when only my intellect ruled me, there was nothing to compare with that which came to me with this inflowing of the Love.
I am now in the third heaven with many beautiful and happy spirits. Your mother and wife are higher up, and are so beautiful and good that when I am in their company I feel that I will become a much happier man if I will try to follow them. Your father has progressed too, and so has Professor Salyards.
Well, my soul is one now that is filled with this Love. My mind is elevated in its thoughts and not inclined to think of those things that are merely intellectual. For I tell you that while knowledge of all God’s laws and nature’s apparent mysteries is desirable, yet a knowledge of this Love of God is far and above compare – and not only more necessary but more desirable. I would not give the feelings that come to me from the possession of this Love for all the sensations of delight that might arise from the discovery of the most stupendous and important law of the workings of nature.
Let this Love come first, and then the other acquirements will only help to show the spirit that God is a God of Wisdom and Power as well as of Love. But as you have read, «Love is the fulfilling of the law» – nothing else is. And the man who has all the knowledge and wisdom without this Love is poor indeed.
Jesus is the most wonderful of all the spirits in both Love and the knowledge of the Father’s attributes. He is the greatest, and knows that the Father’s plans to save and redeem mankind are as he teaches. So you must listen to him and believe. I am going to try to learn more of his teachings, and when I do, you shall know what I learn.
Jesus appears to me the one altogether lovely – he has no competitor, and no one who sees him, if he has any of this Love in his soul, can fail to know that he is the true Jesus of the Bible, and the most perfect son of his Father. I realized this only after this Love came to me; it seems that spirits who have not this Love do not realize who Jesus is, or how wonderful and glorious he is. This may seem strange to you, but it is a fact. Only when the spirit has an awakening of his soul’s love for God does Jesus appear as their great brother and teacher of this Great Love of the Father.
You must not let the things of the material life lead you to think that you must wait until you come to the spirit world to get this Great Love, for I tell you that the man whose soul is opened to the inflowing of this Love while on earth is a much more fortunate man than he who waits until his earthly life ends. If I had only become conscious of this Love when on earth, I would have been saved many hours of suffering and unhappiness after I became a spirit. My own experience is so true to what so many undergo, and will undergo, that if I could proclaim to every man on earth the necessity of becoming possessed of this Love while on earth, I would do so with all my might and strength.
I can tell you of my experience in passing over, but I do not think it best to do so tonight, as it would take too long and require more strength than you have tonight. Sometime soon I will do so in detail.
I am so glad that I have been redeemed by this Great Love, and the teachings of Jesus, and the help of your spirit relatives, and also, by the help of your prayers, that I cannot express the extent of my gladness. Nothing in all heaven or earth can compare with the feelings of joy that come to a soul when it realizes that it is at-one with the Father in Love and power.
Yes, they (old friends of Padgett in spirit world) know, and are with you every night as you pray. They don’t seem to quite understand though that you can help them in any way, but still they, in a manner, feel some peculiar sensation as you pray and the others pray with you. Do not stop praying for them.
I tell you that you are a wonderfully blessed man in having such a loving Christian mother and grandmother to pray with and watch over you all your life. If all men had Christian parents to teach and show them the Way to this Love of God, as they grow from childhood to manhood, many a time of suffering and unhappiness would be avoided, and many a spirit would come into this life with many less sins to atone for.

I AM HERE, Helen,
Let me tell you that you are only making yourself unhappy trying to learn all about the way that I write to you; for you cannot do it, as you are not able to see my method, and I cannot fully explain it to you. But I will try to do as best I can.
When you take hold of the pencil, I exercise all my power to move the pencil so that it will write just what I think, but in order to do that I have to let my thoughts go through your brain. You do not do the thinking but merely let the thoughts pass through your brain, and the movement of the pencil is caused by the exercise of your brain in conjunction with my power which I exercise on the pencil. So you see, you do not originate the thought but merely convey it to the hand, which I guide in accordance with my thought. You do not have anything more to do with what is written than an electric wire has to do with transmitting a message from the party at the end where the message is given.
Let me explain in another way. When I think a thought I pass it through your brain to your hand, and my power to move your hand is brought into action, just as when you think a thought your power to move your hand is brought into action.
My thoughts are not your thoughts; and when I think, your mind catches the thought but does not create the same. So you must believe that I am doing the writing and not you – for I write some thoughts which you could not write if you tried. How do you like that for assurance?
But to be serious, you could not write the things that I write without giving much thought to the different subject matters, for some of them are not familiar to you, as you have often said. Let go the idea that you are writing things which emanate from what is sometimes called your subconscious mind, for you have no subconscious mind, and the philosophers who teach such an idea are not acquainted with the laws of the mind. The mind is only the spiritual evidence of thoughts that congregate in the brain, but which really are not a part of the material thing which the «wise men» call the subconscious self or mind (sic). There is no such thing, and when they let their explanations of things which they cannot account for rest on the assertion that the subconscious mind furnishes these thoughts, they are all wrong. Only the material brain furnishes thoughts which it puts forth from the observation of the senses, or from the faculties which are brought into action when the reason is made the basis of the thoughts.
I am not a very good expounder of these things, but I tried to make it as plain as I could. Yes, I am telling you this from my own observation and understanding of these things. When you receive communications from Mr. Riddle he will be able to explain more fully and more satisfactorily the laws which govern these things, and you must soon let him write.
I am studying the laws of physical and psychical sciences, so that I may be able to assist you in your investigations when you come to search for the true relationship between spirits and mortals, and the laws which control these communications. Yes, my studies include the investigation of the laws governing clairvoyance and inspirational communications. You will have the opportunity sometime to have an experience in each of these phases, and I want to be in condition to assist you to a degree that will help you in arriving at conclusions which will be correct, and which will help others to understand the laws that govern these things.
So you see your wife loves you so much that she is willing to attempt to learn these things which are thought to be only for the masculine minds, in order to help you more clearly understand them.
But while I will do this, I will not cease to try to learn, to the fullest, those things which will give me a clearer understanding of those spiritual truths that lead closer to God and His Love. These are the absolutely necessary; the others are important but not necessary in order that a soul may sooner or later reach the knowledge that makes it one with the Father. The Love of God, which passes all understanding, is the one great thing to learn of and possess.
My home is now so very beautiful that my happiness is more than I can tell you of. You will be also happy when you come over, for I am filling my home with such beautiful thoughts and so much love, that when you come you will wonder how your little wife could possibly have accumulated so much beauty and filled the house with so much love.
Yes, as I receive more of God’s Love into my soul, my home becomes the more beautiful, only I do not have to be in the home to be able to have this Love with me. It is with me all the time, and when I am in my home, the home becomes a reflection of that Love. The home is not beautiful if the Love is not there, so you see the home depends upon the existence of the Love for its beauty. My soul is the creator of my home, and without the soul being beautiful, the home could not be beautiful.
When I leave my home to come to you, the home remains the same, because while my soul is with me, and also the Love that makes it beautiful, yet the home retains the reflection, or as you might say, the atmosphere of that Love to such a degree, that the beauty of the home is not lessened or deteriorated by my temporary absence. So you see the home has a permanency although it depends upon the soul to give it its beauty and loveliness. My home is not yet perfect, but as I grow in God’s Love, then more perfection will come to it; the more Love that I have the more beautiful the home.
We all are dependent upon the degree of love in our souls for the appearance of our homes.
Let your endeavor be to get all of this Love that you possibly can, and if you succeed in getting as much as I have, you will be one with me and our home will be together. If you do not, I will have to wait until you do before we can live as one together. So do try to get all of God’s Love that you can. If you will only give your thoughts to the spiritual things, and let your soul be open to the inflowing of this Love by praying with all your soul longings, you can progress just as rapidly as I do. So love enough and want to be with me enough to try with all your heart to get this Love.
